Family is reunited with dog they surrendered [three years ago]

Here’s an ending almost too happy to be believed. Three years ago, a Washington man surrendered his family dog, a five-year-old shepherd mix named Haley, to the Humane Society for Tacoma and Pierce County. An unspecified family crisis forced the family to give up the dog, the humane society said. Though gone, she was not forgotten. The father still kept photos of the dog on his iphone, and his daughter, now 12, was, still missing and talking about the dog they had said goodbye to years earlier. This week, with their crisis averted and the family having decided to get...

House by house, ‘dog lady’ brings creatures comfortDog Lady Brings Comfort

The 1986 Dodge Ram pickup coughs and sputters. It threatens to slide back down the slushy hill, until Kate Quigley finds its sweet spot, shifting it into four-wheel drive. “All right,” she says as the tires grab. “Let’s go save some dogs.” Quigley — known widely as “the dog lady” and “Miss Kate” — works six days a week, driving into high-poverty neighborhoods to look for animal abuse and neglect. Knocking on doors, talking to owners, leaving supplies. By borrowing pets to have them spayed and neutered, she stops the misery of neglect from repeating itself litter after litter. Inside...

Caring for Pets Left Behind by the Rapture

Many people in the U.S.—perhaps 20 million to 40 million—believe there will be a Second Coming in their lifetimes, followed by the Rapture . Bart Centre, 61, a retired retail executive in New Hampshire, says many people are troubled by this question, and he wants to help. He started a service called Eternal Earth-Bound Pets that promises to rescue and care for animals left behind by the saved. Promoted on the...

Pets not always ideal Valentine's Day gift

NEW YORK, - Pet store operators and humane society workers in New York both say giving pets as a gift on Valentine's Day is not always the right call. The New York Daily News said Saturday Puppy Paradise store manager Mike Rubin recalled one instance in which a customer at his New York store made the ill-advised decision to purchase a puppy for his love interest. "One gentleman last year got a very nice little puppy and the girl freaked out. They were not that close to each other," Rubin said. "He was trying to get, how do I say...

Pets: Are they who we think they are?

CHICAGO, - My dog put her bone in the refrigerator. No kidding! I was standing in front of the fridge Saturday surveying leftovers when my year-old puppy popped her head inside and left her rawhide bow tie bone on the bottom shelf. A cute coincidence I thought. Dogs can't be that smart and frankly it isn't unusual for a dog, or cat for that matter, to poke its head inside a refrigerator. But the incident made me wonder, "Just how smart are these critters?" Even undomesticated animals show incredible intelligence. Colonies of monk parakeets (Quaker Parrot) set up residence in...

(Yikes!) Savage Beagles Terrorize East End

Savage beagles terrorize East End By TAYLOR K. VECSEY January 31, 2010 Charlie Brown, watch your back -- a plague of vicious wild beagles has struck Long Island! These floppy-eared terrors are no lovable Snoopys -- they're abandoned hunting dogs that live in packs and have gone from humble pets to hounds from hell. Mattituck resident Dot Faszczewski came face to face with the canine menace two weeks ago, when she was set upon by a group of crazed, hungry beagles as she walked her pet dogs near her parents' Orient Point home. She said it was like a scene...
